Lucian Bute stopped Edison Miranda with a vicious left upper cut at 1:20 of the third round to retain his super middleweight title Saturday in his adopted hometown of Montreal.

Bute (26-0, 21 knockouts) seemed to hurt Miranda (33-5, 29 KOs) earlier in the third round, prompting Miranda to clown in an apparent attempt to show he wasn’t affected. However, Bute then landed a perfect uppercut on Miranda’s chin and put him down face first.

The Colombian was able to get to his feet but was so unsteady on his legs that the referee stopped the fight.

Bute was making his fifth title defense.
