LOS ANGELES — Israel Vazquez stopped journeyman Angel Priolo at 2:10 of the ninth round of a brutal featherweight fight that was much more difficult than many anticipated Saturday at Nokia Theater.

Vazquez (44-4, 32 knockouts) hadn't fought in 19 months, since the third of his three fights with Rafael Marquez, because of a detached retina.

Vazquez looked rusty and unsure of himself most of the fight, the last few rounds of which he fought with a bad cut over his left eye.

However, Vazquez persevered in what evolved into a toe-to-toe fight before finally hurting Priolo (30-8, 20 KOs).

He put the Colombian down three times in the final round, prompted referee Pat Russell to stop the fight.

The fight was even (76-76) on two cards and one judge had Vazquez ahead (78-74) through eight rounds.

Priolo had lost his previous six fights, although three of the losses were to world-class fighters.
