The bantamweight title bout between Fernando Montiel and former flyweight beltholder Eric Morel that was scheduled for June 27 has been postponed because of an injury suffered by the former two-division titleholder from Mexico.

Montiel (39-2-1, 29 knockouts) sustained a hand injury in training over the weekend, according to Lee Samuels of Top Rank, which promotes both fighters. Morel (41-2, 21 KOs) will not remain on the June 27 Top Rank pay-per-view show that is headlined by his Puerto Rican countryman Juan Manuel Lopez.

The Montiel-Morel bout was the co-feature to the June 27 show from the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J. The Mexico-Puerto Rico showdown, which was for the vacant WBO bantamweight title, figured to be the most competitive bout on the card.

“It's such a good fight that we asked the WBO if we could reschedule it for a September 'Latin Fury' card that we'll hold in New York,” Samuels said.

Popular former junior flyweight titleholder Jorge Arce, who was training for an upcoming Azteca America-televised show, has been added to the June 27 pay-per-view card.

“We needed a Mexican attraction on the card,” Samuels said, “and Jorge was willing to step in for Montiel.”
