Daniel Jacobs, the undefeated super middleweight prospect from Brooklyn, N.Y., could replace James Kirkland on the Manny Pacquiao-Ricky Hatton undercard May 2 in Las Vegas, said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions.

Jacobs (15-0, 14 knockouts) stopped veteran Jose Varela (23-6, 16 KOs) at 1:29 of the second round Friday in Chicago. The brief outing might open the door for him to fight Kirkland’s scheduled opponent, Michael Walker (19-1-2, 12 KOs), only eight days later on pay-per-view.

Schaefer said this is just one possibility under consideration.

“James Kirkland is an emerging start in the sport so we want to replace him with another emerging star, Daniel Jacobs,” Schaefer said. “Jacobs would take the fight even though it would be a big step up for him. Walker is a true veteran of the sport, a tough guy.”

Kirkland on Friday was denied his release from jail, where he’s being held on a federal gun charge, and he was removed from the card.
