HOUSTON – Junior welterweight prospect Danny Garcia got eight quality rounds under his belt during a unanimous decision victory over Cristian Favela on the undercard of the Juan Manuel Marquez-Juan Diaz fight Saturday.

Garcia, who won by scores of 80-72 (twice) and 79-73, outboxed the young journeyman from Los Mochis, Mexico, but he was booed by a pro-Mexican crowd that wanted more action from the Philadelphia prospect.

Garcia (11-0, seven knockouts) outhustled Favela (15-18-6, nine KOs) in workman-like fashion in the early and middle rounds, but began to put punches together in the sixth and seventh rounds when his opponent tried to press him. The crowd finally got into the bout in the final round as both fighters let their hands go.

Middleweight prospect Daniel Jacobs (14-0, 13 KOs) kept his busy schedule rolling with an easy first-round stoppage of over-matched opponent Jose Cruz (12-16-3, four KOs). Jacobs landed an assortment of punches on the pudgy journeyman from Mexico City, but it was a short right hand that dropped Cruz twice and convinced referee Robert Gonzalez to wave the target-practice session off at 2:59 of the opening round of the scheduled six rounder.

Houston native and former amateur standout Hylon Williams (8-0, three KOs) stopped late-substitute Edgar Portillo (3-1, two KOs) after five rounds of a scheduled six-round lightweight bout. Partillo, a natural featherweight from Midland, Texas, who took the fight on 10 hours notice when original opponent Jonathan Bobadilla weighed in 10 pounds over the contracted limit, was aggressive from the start but was out-classed and out-worked by Williams, a budding lightweight prospect who is a teammate of Diaz.

Williams was able to slow Portillo down in the early rounds with body shots and then control him with a hard, well-timed jab. The two occasionally went toe-to-toe to the delight of the crowd with Portillo getting the worst of the inside exchanges. Portillo’s father and trainer had seen enough after the fifth round and called the fight off.

Houston-based welterweight Jermell Charlo (6-0, three KOs) out-slugged Juan Serrano (2-5-1, two KOs) to a crowd-pleasing four-round unanimous decision by three scores of 40-36.

New York City’s Michael Anderson (4-0-1, two KOs) blasted out Houston’s Oscar Rosales (4-4-1, one KOs) with a cross-hook combination at the one-minute mark of the first round of their scheduled four-round welterweight bout.

Wilmington, California’s Ramon Flores (3-4-1, two KOs) knocked out Dallas, Texas’ Hecitor Vazquez (1-1, one KO) with an overhand right at 2:55 of the first round of their scheduled junior welterweight four rounder.

Houston’s Darryl Hayes won his pro debut by unanimous decision, outboxing fellow Houston resident Gerardo Carillo (0-4-1) in a four-round junior welterweight bout, the opening fight of the evening.
