Giampa’s round-by-round

Former Nevada boxing judge Chuck Giampa, now a consultant who advises fighters, will provide his occasional analysis of officials and scorecards when he’s not directly involved in an event. Here are his views and scorecards for the Kelly Pavlik-Marco Antonio Rubio and Miguel Cotto-Michael Jennings fights on Saturday:

Round 1: Pavlik starts the round with jabs and Rubio throws a left; Rubio moves to his left becoming vulnerable to Pavlik's right. Pavlik leads with a right then follows up with a combination; Pavlik double jabs then follows up with a left to the body. Pavlik scores again with a right to the head while Rubio backs away; Pavlik connects with a right shot to the body while Rubio ducks away off the ropes. Pavlik connects again with a left to the body. Pavlik is winning the first two minutes of the round. Pavlik scores with a right then a left uppercut; Rubio backs away to the ropes. Pavlik connects with right punches to the head then a left forcing Rubio to back up to the ropes again; Pavlik closes the round with a combination to the head.

Round 1 Score: Pavlik 10; Rubio 9

Round 2: Pavlik starts the round leading with lefts while Rubio retreats to the ropes. Pavlik scores with a combination and Rubio flicks light counters off the ropes. Pavlik double jabs while Rubio throws a wild right. Pavlik connects with combinations forcing Rubio to the ropes then scores with a right to Rubio's body. Pavlik stalking while Rubio goes on the defense with hands held high. Pavlik connects with a straight right then a left and a right to the head. Pavlik continues with a left hook then a right to the head and a right to the body; a right to the head followed by a double jab forces Rubio to the ropes; Rubio is forced to dance away at the end of the round. Pavlik showed complete control of the round with effective aggression and forcing Rubio to the ropes for more punishment.



Round 2 Score: Pavlik 10 (20); Rubio 9 (18)

Round 3: Pavlik starts the round by scoring with jabs and counter punches; Rubio throws a combination to Plavlik's head. Rubio is more active so far in this round than in previous rounds. Pavlik connects with a body shot and a right to the head then follows up with a combination backing up Rubio to the ropes. Pavlik scores with combinations then forces Rubio to the ropes again with double jabs. Rubio counters and Pavlik throws double left hooks to the body. Pavlik is winning the first two minutes. Pavlik connects with rights while Rubio is on the ropes. Rubio counters with triple jabs; Pavlik then dominates Rubio on the ropes with a combination to close the round.

Round 3 Score: Pavlik 10 (30); Rubio 9 (27)

Round 4: Pavlik starts with jabs backing up Rubio. Rubio throws one punch at a time; Pavlik jabs forcing Rubio to a corner then follows up with strong combinations. Rubio moves away from the corner and Pavlik connects with double jabs. Rubio returns with a punch then Pavlik scores again with a lead hook. Pavlik scores with a right to the head while Rubio is on the ropes again. Pavlik connects with combinations to the body while Rubio tries to counter and misses; Pavlik backs up Rubio with jabs. Pavlik in complete control for full three minutes to win the round.

Round 4 Score: Pavlik 10 (40); Rubio 9 (36)

Round 5: Pavlik starts the action and Rubio counters then Pavlik batters Rubio to the ropes. Pavlik double hooks Rubio to the body while Rubio backs away; Pavlik continues with jabs, hooks to the body and combinations to the head and has Rubio covering up on the ropes. Pavlik out -boxing Rubio with combinations to the body and head, just hitting Rubio at will. Rubio tries to counter but is ineffective; Pavlik then double jabs and scores with a right to the body. Pavlik is winning the first two minutes of the round. Rubio counters Pavlik's punches and backs away. Pavlik throws several jabs while Rubio fights off of the ropes but misses with his counter punching.

Round 5 Score: Pavlik 10 (50); Rubio 9 (45)

Round 6: Rubio starts the round with jabs then backs away; Pavlik double jabs and backs Rubio to the ropes with a left hook to the body. Rubio counter punches with jabs to the head; Pavlik throws an uppercut with Rubio on the ropes and lands a punch to Rubio's head while Rubio misses; round is close after two minutes. Pavlik and Rubio exchange punches then Rubio counters with a strong straight right to the head; both continue in good exchange when Rubio connects with triple jabs and a strong right at the end of the round; Rubio's best round and wins in the last minute by a close 10-9 margin.

Round 6 Score Pavlik 9 (59); Rubio 10 (55)

Round 7: Rubio jabs then misses with a right; Rubio flicking jabs while Pavlik connects with a good left and backs up Rubio; Rubio counters but Pavlik leads with a right and is throwing the more effective, harder punches; Pavlik is more effective after the first two minutes; Pavlik scores with a right body shot; Rubio leads with a left and Pavlik counters with combinations with Rubio on the ropes; Rubio misses his counters while Pavlik backs up Rubio with jabs; Rubio throwing one jab at a time; Pavlik's combinations force Rubio to the ropes then Pavlik connects with lefts and rights to the body and head; Pavlik continues to attack and score, backing up Rubio.

Round 7 Score: Pavlik 10 (69); Rubio 9 (64)

Round 8: Rubio flicking jabs lightly then throws a wild right; Pavlik counters with combinations; Rubio counters then Pavlik scores with combinations, forcing Rubio to the ropes then Pavlik continues with a double jab; Rubio throws two body shots and Pavlik scores with double jabs keeping Rubio on the ropes; Pavlik connects with a double hook to the body followed up with more double hooks, staggering Rubio; Rubio tries to counter but Pavlik connects with a right to the head then fires rights while Rubio is in the corner; Rubio misses with two right crosses at the end of the round.

Round 8 Score: Pavlik 10 (79); Rubio 9 (73)

Round 9: Pavlik starts the round with combinations while Rubio is ineffective with counters; Pavlik connects with a right to the body followed with good head shots then a hook to the body in the middle of the round; Pavlik is out boxing Rubio with double jabs followed with two rights to the body; Rubio back on the ropes; Pavlik connects with a hard right to the body and stiff jabs; Pavlik continues with right crosses and left hooks and backs up Rubio to the ropes again with a body shot and combinations to the head and body hitting Rubio at will to dominate all three minutes of the round.

Round 9 Score: Pavlik 10 (89); Rubio 9 (82)

Rubio cannot come out for round 10; Kelly Pavlik declared the winner by TKO after 9 rounds.

MIGUEL COTTO-MICHAEL JENNINGS

Round 1: Cotto misses then throws a punch to the body; both in feeling out process; Cotto moves forward; Jennings lands a combination; Cotto cautious then counters with a left then leads with a right; Cotto connects with a double jab; advantage to Cotto in first two minutes; Jennings lands a right and Cotto rebounds with a left to the body; Cotto using head movement on defense; advantage to Cotto who was more aggressive.

Round 1 Score: Cotto 10; Jennings 9

Round 2: Jennings starts the round by missing with jabs and combinations; Jennings too far away from Cotto to connect; Cotto moves forward and connects with a left to the head; Jennings jabs but Cotto moves Jennings to the ropes; Jennings clinches and Cotto jabs then connects with a left hook then follows up with a double jab; Jennings caught with a left to the head; advantage to Cotto with effective aggression after 2 minutes; Cotto stalks Jennings while Jennings dances away; Cotto connects with a left at the end of the round.

Round 2 Score: Cotto 10 (20); Jennings 9 (18)

Round 3: Cotto starts the round by aggressively moving forward; Jennings throws a light jab and Cotto moves him to the ropes; Jennings dances away and misses with jabs then has his jab blocked; Cotto leads with jabs; Jennings throws a triple jab and Cotto counters to give Jennings a bloody nose; Jennings again misses with jabs and then has his jabs blocked by Cotto; Cotto connects with a right to the head; advantage to Cotto after two minutes; Jennings jabs then Cotto connects with lefts to the body in close range then continues with a left hook and a left to the head to end the round. Cotto found his rhythm in this round by moving forward and forcing Jennings to the ropes.

Round 3 Score: Cotto 10 (30); Jennings 9 (27)

Round 4: Jennings starts the round by flicking light jabs and Cotto
counters with effective jabs; then Cotto double jabs; Jennings continues to flick light jabs while moving backwards and sideways in a defensive mode; Jennings connects with a right to the head; Cotto counters then follows with a solid left to the body; Cotto double jabs while Jennings misses with a left; Cotto connects with a left to the head forces Jennings to the ropes and connects with a left hook to the body to knockdown Jennings; In the last minute Cotto continues with combinations to the head and body forcing Jennings to be knocked down for the second time in this round; as Jennings gets up, Cotto forces Jennings to the corner and finishes strong with combinations and another left hook to the body.

Round 4 Score: Cotto 10 (40); Jennings 7 (34)

Round 5: Jennings flicks his jabs then Cotto connects with two rights to the body; Cotto follows up with lefts to the body and double jabs; Jennings just flicks jabs ineffectively and clinches; Cotto snaps Jennings' head with a left shot then follows with another hard left to head forcing Jennings to the ropes again; Jennings just flicking jabs while Cotto stalks and scores with combinations; then drops Jennings again with a right to the head; Jennings up at the count of 9; however, referee, Benji Esteves, stops the fight.

Cotto the winner by TKO in the 5th round.
