Morales should reconsider comeback

Erik Morales is making a serious mistake.

The former six-time titleholder has lost his last four fights and five out of his last six yet is planning to make a comeback and wants to fight only big-name contenders, including Juan Manuel Marquez.

Morales is only 32 – but an old 32 after so many wars. Marquez would destroy him, which is something no fan of his wants to see. In his last fight, Morales struggled against David Diaz, who is a strong, but ordinary fighter.

Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, confirmed that Morales contacted the office to inquire about a possible fight against Marquez, whom he has never faced.

Schaefer said Marquez-Morales is a possibility but wasn’t overly excited about the prospect.

“Manny Pacquiao is another interesting fight for Marquez. Which one is bigger?” Schaefer said.

Obviously, Morales wants to make as much money as possible while he can still throw punches. And who can blame him? Still, he was one of the best, most-entertaining fighters of his time. No one wants to see him struggle in the ring, as he has recently.

Morales also is talking about a fourth fight against Marco Antonio Barrera, who faces Amir Khan next month. If Morales insists upon fighting, Barrera would be preferable to Marquez because he has also declined.

Let’s just hope Morales changes his mind. He just doesn’t have it any more.
