THE RING's reigning light heavyweight champ and former super middleweight champ Joe Calzaghe announced his retirement to the BBC Thursday.

Calzaghe compiled a 46-0 (32) record on his way to being recognized as one of the best European fighters of the past two decades.

During his 16-year career he held the WBO, IBF, WBC, and WBA super middleweight titles before stepping up in weight to narrowly outpoint Bernard Hopkins for THE RING light heavyweight title last year.

Apart from Hopkins, Calzaghe defeated eight other fighters who had held world title recognition at one time or another, including Roy Jones Jr., Chris Eubank and then-undefeated titleholders Mikkel Kessler and Jeff Lacy.

Calzaghe made 21 title defenses of the WBO 168-pound belt he won from Eubank in 1997.
