Shaw would welcome Dawson-Hopkins

Gary Shaw, the promoter of Chad Dawson, said he’d welcome a fight against Bernard Hopkins should Dawson beat Glen Johnson on Nov. 11.
Hopkins, THE RING’s No. 1-rated light heavyweight, has expressed interest in facing either RING cruiserweight champion Tomasz Adamek (38-1, 26 knockouts) or the winner of Dawson-Johnson in his next fight.
Richard Schaefer, Hopkins’ promoter, is in New York to meet with Adamek’s handlers to discuss a fight in January, around Hopkins’ 45th birthday.
Hopkins (49-5-1, 32 KOs) hasn’t fought since he easily outpointed Kelly Pavlik in October.
“A thousand percent,” said Shaw, referring to how much he would support a Dawson-Hopkins matchup. “I think it took time for Hopkins to realize that HBO wasn’t going to buy a fight with him against a bum. It took all this time and he doesn’t have a fight this year. He’s not getting any younger.
“I have a lot of respect for Bernard. I think if Dawson wins, we could see that fight in the first quarter of next year.”
Dawson (28-0, 17 KOs) scored a controversial decision over Johnson (49-12-2, 33 KOs) in April of last year.
Meanwhile, Shaw confirmed that Vic Darchinyan probably will face Tomas Rojas of Mexico in a junior bantamweight fight on Dec. 5 in the U.S.
Darchinyan is coming off a one-sided loss to Joseph Agbeko in a bantamweight title fight but has retained two of his three junior bantamweight titles, which would be at stake against Rojas. Darchinyan (32-2-1, 26 KOs) vacated the IBF title.
Rojas (31-11-1, 22 KOs) has lost to some of the biggest names in and around the division, including Jorge Arce, Anselmo Moreno, Gerry Penalosa and Cristian Mijares, but has been stopped only by Arce in 2007.
