The donated organs of fallen fighter Francisco Rodriquez will help save the lives of eight people, including his uncle.

Rodriguez, who fought under the nickname "El Niño Azteca" but was just "Paco" to his family and friends, died this past Sunday night at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, Penn., after succumbing to a brain injury suffered during a 10th-round stoppage to fellow bantamweight prospect Teon Kennedy two nights earlier.

One of Rodriguez's uncles was in desperate need of a kidney transplant and the vital organ given by his nephew saved his life.

“We just learned that Paco and our uncle are a match,” said Rodriguez's brother Alex Rodriguez. “Our uncle has been on the waiting list for a kidney transplant for a long, long time."

After Rodriguez’s death, Alex and other family members discussed their options with a representative from the Gift of Life donor program. The family agreed on the decision to donate.

“My brother was so strong and healthy. His heart and lungs were in perfect condition. It would have been a terrible waste not to share his life with others. How could we not help another family?" Alex Rodriguez said.

“Although we’ve tragically lost Paco, we’re able to give this incredible gift of life to another family member.

“My family is desperately grieving the loss, but there is some comfort knowing that he will save at least eight lives and benefit so many families."

Rodriguez, an amateur standout who compiled 76-6 record on his way to winning the 2004 National Olympic Eastern Trials, turned pro at age 20 on January 14, 2005, fighting in front of a hometown crowd at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago.

Rodriguez, who compiled a 14-3 (8) pro record, was a staple and fan favorite at 8 Count Productions-promoted cards at the Aragon Ballroom and the Cicero Stadium in Cicero, Illinois.

His best victory was a third-round stoppage of Angel Priolo last May. Rodriguez dropped the tough Colombian journeyman, who gave former 122-pound Israel Vazquez hell in October, in each round.

Rodriguez is survived by his wife, their five-month-old baby girl, parents, two brothers, and an extended family of loved ones.

An account has been established to help ease the family’s medical expenses. Donations can be made at any Chase Bank location in America. You may deposit directly to the Francisco Rodriguez Estate fund account #707331062.
