Williams to fight Martinez
Paul Williams will fight Sergio Martinez in a 12-round middleweight bout on Dec. 5 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J., on HBO, ESPN.com reported.
Williams, rated No. 1 at junior welterweight and No. 3 at middleweight by THE RING, had been scheduled to fight Kelly Pavlik but Pavlik pulled out because of a persistent staph infection in his hand.
Heavyweight Chris Arreola also will fight on the card, although an opponent has yet to be selected. He is coming off a knockout loss to Vitali Klitschko last month in Los Angeles.
Williams (37-1, 27 knockouts) hasn’t fought since he dominated Winky Wright en route to a 12-round decision in a middleweight bout in April.
Martinez (4-1-2, 24 KOs) is coming off a controversial draw against Kermit Cintron in February, a fight most observers believed the Spain-based Argentine won. Martinez is THE RING’s No. 4 junior middleweight.
Among those being considered for Arreola are Derrick Rossy and Brian Minto.
