Perhaps the most controversial finish of the year may soon have resolution.

The IBF ordered a rematch between Andre Dirrell and Jose Uzcategui following their interim super middleweight title bout that gained viral attention for its maniacal conclusion.

Uzcategui, in the midst of a combination, rolled into a third punch which connected after the bell to end Round 8, when Dirrell dropped to the canvas. In came Dirrell’s uncle, Leon Lawson Jr., who landed haymakers to Uzcategui’s jaw, spurring an arrest warrant and banishment from Maryland as a cornerman, where the Showtime-televised bout took place.

The IBF cited two key reasons for the rematch order. Referee Bill Clancy informed Dirrell that he would be the victor prior to the official decision, which is against rules. And, moreso, there was no proof it was an intentional foul. If Uzcategui’s foul was deemed accidental, the decision would have went to the scorecards, and Uzcategui (26-2, 22 knockouts), who was ahead on two three scorecards, would have won the fight via technical decision.

When the two meet again, Dirrell (26-2, 16 KOs) likely will need a new chief second. Lawson was subsequently suspended by Maryland, and it’s likely other states will respect the ban. The WBA and WBC also placed sanctions on Lawson, who was wanted for assault.

James DeGale, the IBF’s recognized champion at 168 pounds, is on the mend following a second surgical procedure performed on his right shoulder.
