On April 8, Maciej Sulecki ended a 10-month spell of inactivity with a third-round victory over Mexican-born club-fighter Michi Munoz.

What made that win noteworthy was that it took place at junior middleweight. Previously Sulecki, who advanced his unbeaten record to (24-0, 9 knockouts) had campaigned at middleweight, where he was ranked by THE RING and three of the sanctioning bodies.

However, the surprising drop in weight was done with the view to challenging a certain Puerto Rican superstar who just happens to be on the lookout for a dance partner for his anticipated June 24 return.

“l know I can challenge Miguel Cotto,” Sulecki told RingTV.com through his manager Andrew Wasilewski. “Now I’m sure that I can fight at 154 pounds. I’m sure I can win against Cotto.”

Sulecki, who turns 28 years old tomorrow, had fought four times in America but after the PBC dates dried up, Sulecki like many others was forced to the sidelines.

Eventually his team decided to bring him back to his native Poland, where he easily dispatched Munoz.

Sulecki is unconcerned with such matters and issued a direct challenge to Cotto, a former four-weight world titleholder.

“I’m absolutely ready to fight Cotto,” he said. “Whenever, wherever. If this fight will not happen it will be Cotto’s decision. Do you think Cotto is afraid of me?”

Wasilewski, a key player in Polish boxing is keen to facilitate his fighter.

“He dreams about fighting with Cotto,” explained the manager. “He is already very strong but must have regular fights. Three per year (would be) the best.”

Having proven he can make 154 pounds, maybe Sulecki is a new and intriguing option for Cotto’s comeback.
