Erislandy Lara’s junior middleweight title defense against Yuri Foreman on Jan. 13 will air on Spike TV at the Hialeah Park Amphitheater in Hialeah, Florida, Spike TV spokesman David Schwarz told RingTV.com on Monday.

The bout is viewed by officials as a stay-busy effort for Lara (23-2-2, 13 knockouts) before he seeks a unification match with another titleholder. In this case, Jermell Charlo, who holds the WBC 154-pound strap, is eyed as Lara’s big-fight opponent down the line in 2017.

Lara, the WBA champion and a Cuban defector, last fought on May 21, winning a rematch against Vanes Martirosyan in Las Vegas. Brooklyn’s Foreman is a 36-year-old who seemed to peak in 2009 when he won a 154-pound belt against Daniel Santos with a wide decision.

Foreman, who relies on accuracy and movement to befuddle opponents, lost his next fight to Miguel Cotto at Yankee Stadium in 2010, sustaining a knee injury before the bout was stopped in the ninth round. The 5-11 Foreman (34-2, 10 KOs) stepped away from the ring for two years before he returned in December of 2015 against Lenwood Dozier, winning a decision. He stopped Jason Davis in the second round in June. Now, he’s stepping way up in class against the Cuban stylist.
