MANILA, Philippines – Jonathan Taconing appeared on his way to an easy decision win in the 10th and final round before a pair of left crosses sent Salatiel Amit falling through the ropes and onto the floor at the Elorde Sports Complex in Parañaque City, Philippines, on Saturday.

Referee Silvestre Abainza waved the fight off immediately, awarding Taconing (23-3-1, 19 knockouts) a technical knockout win 29 seconds into the round. The win was Taconing’s first since being outboxed by WBC junior flyweight titleholder Ganigan Lopez in July, the second time Taconing had failed to return home with a world title.

The 29-year-old from Siocon, Zamboanga del Norte, Philippines, had been in control from the first round, pushing the 24-year-old Amit to the ropes with his superior strength and punching power. Taconing used his right jab better than he did against Lopez and set up his straight lefts better as a result.

Taconing’s body punching was also significant throughout the bout, and by the middle rounds Amit (9-2-2, 7 KOs) was bleeding from a cut on his right eye. After the eighth round, all three judges had the fight a 79-73 blowout for Taconing according to WBC open scoring (the fight was contested for a minor WBC belt).

After the fight, medics administered oxygen to Amit in the corner. Amit was well enough afterward to congratulate Taconing and pose for photos.

Taconing’s manager, Johnny Elorde, says he intends to petition for another crack at a world title at the upcoming WBC convention, which takes place December 11-17 in Hollywood, Florida. Elorde also says that Taconing could be back in the ring by January for a stay-busy fight.

Jackson outpoints Lopez in Australia

Australian featherweight and 2012 Olympian Luke Jackson maintained his unbeaten record with a unanimous decision over Filipino boxer Silvester Lopez at Princes Wharf No. 1 in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.

The scores were 97-93, 98-93 and 96-94 for Jackson (13-0, 5 KOs), who earned a minor WBO title with the win. Lopez, a former world title challenger who has fallen on hard times in recent years, drops to 27-12-2 (19 KOs).
