Strawweight beltholder Jose Argumedo made short work of Jose Antonio Jimenez on Saturday, dropping his mandatory challenger twice and overwhelming the Colombian with a barrage of haymakers in Round 3 of the IBF title bout held in Ciudad Valle, San Luis Potosi, Mexico.

It was the second title defense for Argumedo (19-3-1, 11 knockouts), a free-swinging 105 pounder who upset the odds when he won the IBF belt with a nine-round technical decision over respected Japanese veteran Katsunari Takayama last December. Argumedo, a 28-year-old native of Nayarit who is trained by Eddy Reynoso, outpointed Julio Mendoza in his first title defense in July.

Jimenez (17-6-1, 7 KOs) earned his shot at Argumedo by traveling to China where he scored a split decision over Chao Zhong Xiong in an IBF title-elimination bout. With the victory, Argumedo has likely set up a rematch with Takayama, who recently won the WBO 105-pound title. The title unification showdown will probably take place in Japan as did the first bout, according to Reynoso.

Saturday’s title defense against Jimenez, which was promoted by Reynoso’s Clase y Talento company, was streamed live on RingTV.com in Mexico and the U.S.
