Richard Schaefer is wasting little time immersing himself back in big-time boxing.

After sitting on the sideline for more than two years, the former Golden Boy CEO will co-promote back-to-back Showtime cards in December and January in what could be the start of a busy 2017 for him. Six weeks after he stages a Dec. 10 show in Los Angeles, Schaefer will also co-promote Carl Frampton’s featherweight title rematch with Leo Santa Cruz on Jan. 28 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, he confirmed to RingTV.com on Friday.

Schaefer will work with Frampton’s group, Cyclone Promotions on the card, he said. Mikey Garcia will challenge lightweight titleholder Dejan Zlaticanin in the co-feature on Jan. 28. And because Zlaticanin is promoted by Lou DiBella — the New York-based promoter will also have a role on the show. Schaefer declined to comment further on the date or on any future shows he might be handling.

But a source told RingTV.com on Friday that Schaefer may also be under consideration to possibly promote the highly anticipated welterweight unification match between Danny Garcia and Keith Thurman on March 4. However, other sources have said the fight is slated for Barclays Center in Brooklyn — assuming the issues with the new health insurance regulations are resolved — in which case DiBella would promote it. DiBella declined to comment when reached on his cell phone.

Schaefer and Tom Brown are teaming up to co-promote the Dec. 10 card at USC’s Galen Center in which Abner Mares will face secondary titleholder Jesus Cuellar in the main event and Jermall Charlo is defending his 154-pound title against mandatory Julian Williams in the co-feature. Whatever happens, one thing is clear: Schaefer, who recently signed U.S. Olympian Carlos Balderas to his new promotional firm, Ringstar Sports, appears to be back in the mix for some significant cards.
