Tom Loeffer remains in talks with Al Haymon to make a fight between middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin and his mandatory challenger, Danny Jacobs for early 2017, he told RingTV.com on Wednesday morning, giving an update on the status of the negotiations. A separate source said the fight is being targeted for either mid March or late April. But there was no indication the sides are closer than they were weeks ago.

“We’re still trying to work out a deal with Al that’s fair for both fighters,” Loeffler said in a phone interview. “All indication is that Jacobs wants the fight and we’re just trying to work out a deal that benefits both fighters with Al and as soon as something is finalized we’re looking forward to announcing something for 2017.”

As far as a date and venue for the fight, Loeffler, who handles Golovkin, said the sides were discussing those details. He said the WBA has basically left the two camps alone as they try to hammer out a deal and that no purse bid has been ordered. WBA president Gilberto Mendoza didn’t return an email for comment. Keith Connolly, who advises Jacobs, declined comment on Wednesday when reached on his cell phone. “It’s pretty open-ended as long as both sides indicate that we feel we can make a deal and that we’re in discussions,” Loeffler said of the WBA’s attitude toward ordering a purse bid. “They would rather see the promoters work out a deal so that’s where we’re at right now.”

The sides have been negotiating since Golovkin, who holds the WBA, WBC and IBF titles, stopped Kell Brook on Sept. 10 and the WBA ordered the camps to make a deal in the next 30 days and for the fight to take place within the next 120 days. Of course, that was wishful thinking. The WBA’s deadline to make the fight with Jacobs, who holds a secondary title, has been pushed back to accommodate the discussions.
