Heavy-handed Lucas Matthysse is targeting March or April to make his long-awaited return from an eye injury, Golden Boy president Eric Gomez told RingTV.com.

Argentina’s Matthysse hasn’t fought since he was stopped in the tenth round by Viktor Postol on Oct. 3 of 2015 for a 140-pound title, fracturing his left orbital bone. Matthysse was trying to come back as the Canelo Alvarez-Amir Khan co-feature on May 7 but withdrew because his eye wasn’t ready. Gomez said Matthysse (37-4, 34 knockouts) is back in the gym and no longer has any issues with his eye and has no thoughts of retiring. He intends to campaign as a welterweight.

“He’ll come back in the first quarter of next year,” Gomez said in a phone interview. “He’ll come back in March or April. He’s training again. He feels good now. He feels 100 percent with his eye. We’re looking to bring him back in the first quarter of next year. He’s doing light training. He says he feels great. He will be coming back.”
