Tomoki Kameda got back in the win column Saturday night, knocking out over-matched Edgar Martinez in the opening round at the Gimnasio G2 in Iztapalapa, Districto Federal, Mexico.

Kameda, a former WBO bantamweight world titleholder, improves to 32-2, 20 knockouts. Martinez falls to 18-14-1, 10 KOs.

It was Kameda’s first fight in over 13 months and his first win in almost two years. Kameda lost back-to-back decisions last year to WBA bantamweight world titleholder Jamie McDonnell.

Kameda, who is originally from Osaka, Japan and currently resides in the Mexico City area, was originally scheduled to fight Cecilio Santos before that fight fell through earlier in the week.

Martinez, who resides in the northern Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez, entered the fight winless in three fights.

Thirty seconds into the opening round, Kameda school Martinez with a right cross to the head. It was only a matter of time as Kameda stalked his opponent, looking to land one punch to drop Martinez.

It happened about later in the round as Kameda landed a left hook to the top of the head, dropping Martinez flat onto his back. Referee Guadalupe ‘Lupe’ Garcia immediately stopped the bout at 1:17.

Kameda fought at 123 pounds Saturday night. It would be interesting to see whether Kameda would fight again at 118 pounds or campaign as a junior featherweight.

Kameda is ranked number four by the WBA and number seven by Ring Magazine.

In the main event of the Zanfer Promotions card, Anabel Ortiz (23-3, 4 KOs) successfully defended her WBA World female minimumweight title with a 10 round unanimous decision over Debora Rengifo (7-3-1, 3 KOs).

Scores were 99-91, 96-94, and 98-92 for Ortiz.

Both bouts aired on Azteca TV in Mexico and beIN Sports en Espanol in the U.S.
