Junior lightweight contender Andres Gutierrez rebounded from his first defeat as a pro Saturday night, stopping Wallington Orobio in the sixth round at the Palenque del Ecocentro Expositor El Marques in Queretaro, Queretaro, Mexico.

With the win, Gutierrez improves to 35-1-1 (25 knockouts). Orobio falls to 17-2 (14 KOs).

Gutierrez lost by 12-round majority decision to Cristian Mijares four months ago in Cancun, Mexico.

After an even couple of rounds, the 23-year-old Gutierrez slowly began breaking down the fighter from Barranquilla, Colombia. Gutierrez walked Orobio down, landing straight rights and lefts to the head and connecting with hooks to the body.

Orobio’s punch output dropped significantly in round five and he dropped to the canvas after the bell sounded to end the round after Gutierrez landed a barrage of punches. No 10-count was administered.

Sensing Orobio was still hurt, Gutierrez pressed the attack, landing repeatedly to the head, prompting Orobio’s corner to throw in the towel at 50 seconds into round six.

“Orobio did hit hard,” said Gutierrez, who is ranked No. 9 by the WBC. “I like the level of opposition I’ve faced, especially with Mijares and Orobio. Of course I would love a rematch with Mijares. I would love to be the first world champion from the state of Queretaro.”

Lightweight Juan Jose Martinez (26-3, 18 KOs) stopped Rodolfo Flores (13-4, 5 KOs) in the fourth round. Martinez was stopped in the fifth round at the hands of Felix Verdejo four months earlier.

The Promociones Del Pueblo card was broadcast live on Televisa throughout Mexico.
