Sampson Lewkowicz has shown an uncanny ability to discover unfamiliar gems and polish them into champions (or have others polish them). He’s credited for uncovering Manny Pacquiao and Sergio Martinez, so when he praises or signs a fighter, it’s worth a look.

On Monday, Lewkowicz’s promotional outfit, Sampson Boxing announced the signing of Argentinean welterweight slugger Cesar Miguel (La Joya) Barrionuevo to an exclusive long-term promotional deal.

The southpaw Barrionuevo (30-3-2, 20 knockouts) isn’t totally unknown. He garnered attention in January of this year when he landed a one-punch knockout that felled Panama’s Azael Cosio in the fifth round in Mexico, the first time he fought outside of Argentina.

Barrionuevo was then scheduled to face Sammy Vasquez but that matchup was scrapped when Vasquez opted to face former Olympic gold medalist Felix Diaz intead, losing a decision in July. Lewkowicz hopes to expose Barrionuevo, who has won six straight since his last loss in 2013, to larger markets in the hopes of securing a big-money fight.

“He is 27 years old and still getting better with every fight,” Lewkowicz said in a press release. “Cesar is a talent who is coming to the North American market to make trouble for a lot of fighters. I am working on finding him a big fight to showcase his skills, whether against Diaz, or any other top-15 welterweight contender. He won’t be unknown for long once that happens.”
