Bronx welterweight Eddie Gomez has been medically cleared to resume his career and return to training after an eye injury forced him off Canelo Alvarez’s eventual stoppage of Liam Smith at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas las month, he told RingTV.com.

The athletic Gomez suffered an abrasion on his eye in a sparring session just a week before his scheduled fight with Dario Ferman (13-1, 10 knockouts) on the non-televised portion of the undercard.

Gomez (19-1, 11 KOs) has since returned to the gym and plans to start sparring in another two weeks, he said in a text message. Gomez picked up a tough win against John Karl Sosa in May after he was off for more than a year as he decided whether to re-sign with Golden Boy. He ended up resuming his career with the LA-based company in February and officials at Golden Boy were hoping the 24-year-old could work his way back to earn a possible title shot in late 2017. Now, it’s unclear how the eye injury will affect those plans.
