Laz Benitez, a spokesman for the New York State Department of State, which oversees the New York State Athletic Commission, told THE RING today that Tom Hoover has resigned as chairman of the commission.

Hoover’s resignation, which has been accepted, comes on the heels of a report issued this afternoon by the New York State Inspector General’s Office that found Hoover had “permitted friends and relatives to obtain credentials allowing them to attend boxing matches free of charge and recommended that a personal friend apply for an Athletic Commission position, knowing that he was unqualified.”

“In doing so,”the report continued, “Hoover may have violated the New York Public Officers Law.”

The allegations against Hoover and his conduct in office are among many problems that have plagued the NYSAC in recent months.
