Adding another layer of confusion to the WBA’s mandatory title mess at light heavyweight, secondary titleholder Juergen Braehmer is scheduled to defend his WBA trinket against Nathan Cleverly Oct. 1 at the Jahnsportforum in Neubrandenburg, Germany on Sky Sports, it was announced on Friday.

On Wednesday, the WBA mandated that light heavy unified champion Sergey Kovalev face Braehmer next, a stipulation that Kovalev promoter Kathy Duva rejected, telling RingTV.com it was a “clerical error” on behalf of the WBA.

The WBA is standing by its decision to make Braehmer Kovalev’s mandatory. So how Braehmer-Cleverly figures into the WBA’s plans for Kovalev is anyone’s guess. WBA president Gilberto Mendoza Jr. didn’t immediately return an email to clarify the situation, though on Thursday he did say his organization wouldn’t stand in the way from Kovalev facing Andre Ward in November.

In any event, Braehmer is now set to face former titleholder Cleverly in October in Germany. The two were initially supposed to meet in 2011 at the 02 Arena in London but an eye injury forced Braehmer to pull out.

“In boxing you can never say never,” Braehmer said in a press release. “This is a fight the fans have wanted to see for a long time and I’m happy it’s finally happening. I look forward to meeting Nathan Cleverly in the ring at the Jahnsportforum and proving once and for all who is the better boxer. “

Cleverly (29-3, 15 knockouts) of Wales is coming off a narrow loss to Andrzej Fonfara last October while Braehmer (48-2, 35 KOs) won a decision in March over Eduard Gutknecht in Germany, where he has fought his entire career.
