The man who gave Gennady Golovkin one of his toughest outings has re-signed with his promoter. Willie Monroe Jr. has inked a new exclusive promotional agreement with Banner Promotions, the company announced on Tuesday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The great nephew of former middleweight contender Willie “The Worm” Monroe, Monroe (20-2, 6 knockouts) landed cleanly against the iron-chinned Golovkin, eventually succumbing in the sixth round in May of 2015. He bounced back with a unanimous decision win against John Thompson on June 11.

“I’m excited to re-sign with Banner Promotions,” Monroe said in a press release. “Artie has been nothing but great to me, and he’ll put me in position to fight against the Danny Jacobs and Canelos of the boxing world,” Monroe Jr. said of Banner Promotions president Artie Pelullo. “It feels good to have a fresh start over. I am coming off of a huge win on Showtime versus John Thompson, and I now have a great team watching my back with my brother, Trent Monroe, TJ Nolan and Adrian Clark as my Strategic Partner.”

The 29-year-old Monroe turned pro in 2008 and won his first 10 bouts before losing a split decision to Darnell Boone. Monroe won the 2014 Boxcino Middleweight tournament with wins over Donatas Bondorovas, Vitally Kopylenko, and Brandon Adams, leading to his shot with Golovkin.
