Mikey Garcia vs Juan Carlos Burgos - fukuda

Former two-division champion Mikey Garcia is eying a July 30 return at Barclays Center in Brooklyn underneath the featherweight title fight between Leo Santa Cruz and Carl Frampton, Showtime boxing chief Stephen Espinoza told RingTV.com on Thursday.

Garcia’s bout would serve as the co-feature to the Showtime main event if it comes to fruition, Espinoza said. While nothing has been settled, the sides seem to be in advanced discussions and Espinoza spoke eagerly of Garcia’s return. An opponent has yet to be named, he said.

“We would like for that to happen,” Espinoza said of the July 30 comeback. “It hasn’t quite been finalized, but we think he’s a talented fighter; the sport has missed him, and he’s fought in New York City before. He’s a good match with Leo and Frampton (as the co-feature), so I think we’d like to make it happen and we’re working to make it happen.”

Garcia (34-0, 28 knockouts) is just 28 and if he regains his form, could easily become another standout in the lightweight and junior welterweight divisions, where he will likely campaign. Garcia hasn’t fought since Jan. 25 of 2014 against Juan Carlos Burgos at Madison Square Garden after a long legal squabble with former promoter Top Rank that ended in a settlement this past April.

Danny Jacobs was initially penciled in to return against Sergio Mora on July 30 as the co-feature in Brooklyn, but that bout has been moved to September to headline a card in either Las Vegas or New York.
