Chris Arreola at Harper weighin

Deontay Wilder has moved on from Alexander Povetkin, literally and figuratively.

Wilder is expected to defend his WBC heavyweight belt against former title challenger Chris Arreola on July 16 at Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama on a PBC on Fox show, an official involved with the bout confirmed to RingTV.com on Wednesday. Nothing has been announced as official, the source said, but Arreola is likely to get the assignment.

Wilder (36-0, 35 knockouts) was originally supposed to face Alexander Povetkin on May 21 in Moscow but that fight was scuttled after Povetkin failed a pre-fight drug test for the banned substance meldonium. The WBC ruled that Wilder, who is from nearby Tuscaloosa, would be allowed to make a voluntary defense of his title while it continues to deliberate over whether to suspend Povetkin or allow him another chance to face Wilder.

Meanwhile, Povetkin’s loss is Arreola’s gain. The personable 35-year-old heavyweight from Riverside, California has come up short in his previous two title challenges. Arreola (36-4-1, 31 KOs) was also hit with a 90-day administrative suspension for testing positive for marijuana following his split-decision win against Travis Kauffman in December that was changed to a no-decision. Arreola also tested positive for marijuana following a 2011 win against Friday Ahunanya.

Still, despite Arreola’s recent difficulties, he remains an exciting , popular figure to fill-in for Povetkin, and he will be attempting to become the first Mexican-American to win a heavyweight crown. Whatever happens, Arreola’s power should make the fight interesting for as long as it lasts. Wilder last fought at Legacy Arena, which seats up to 17,654 for sporting events, on Sept. 26 when he stopped Johann Duhaupas in the 11th round.
