Marcos Villasana Jr. has been counting down the days to avenge his most recent loss.
Meanwhile, Nery Saguilan has put together a lengthy winning streak, one that could lead to a major title shot.
Villasana and Saguilan will meet Saturday night at Centro de Convenciones in Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico. The 12-round lightweight bout will air live on Televisa (Channel 5) throughout Mexico, beginning at 10:30 p.m. CT.
The bout is a rematch of their March 2015 clash, in which Saguilan won a 10-round unanimous decision.
Villasana (18-6, 11 knockouts) has won his last three bouts straight since the loss to Saguilan. The son of former WBC featherweight titleholder Marcos Villasana Sr., the 25-year-old fighter believes he can follow through on his promise of avenging the loss.
There are some limitations however as Villasana insisted there is no fight if Saguilan comes in above the 135-pound limit at Friday’s weigh-in.
“I’m near the weight for Saturday,” said Villasana in a press release. “On the other hand, Saguilan is fat. He says he’s in shape but I see him full of tamales. If he doesn’t make weight, there is no fight.”
“I’m not giving him any advantages in this fight. I have an obligation to the people of my hometown (Acapulco).”
Saguilan (37-5-1, 13 KOs) won a 12-round split decision over Leonardo Doronio in his last bout on Jan. 30.
The Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico resident has won his last 10 fights in a row. One of those victories was against former junior welterweight titlist DeMarcus Corley by a very close 12-round decision last August.
Opening the “Sabados de Box” broadcast will be a 10-round women’s junior flyweight clash between Lourdes Juarez (15-2, 2 KOs) against Suri Tapia (7-6, 2 KOs).
Also on the card will be an eight-round junior welterweight clash between Francisco Perez (15-6-1, 11 KOs) and Diego Cruz (14-3-1, 11 KOs).
