Javier Fortuna is traveling abroad after missing out on the chance to face Vasyl Lomachenko in New York.

Once rumored to be in the running to face the two-time Olympic gold medalist on June 11, Fortuna (29-0-1, 21 knockouts) is now scheduled to face Jason Sosa (18-1-4, 14 KOs) in a junior lightweight bout on June 24 at the 18,000-seat Beijing National Indoor Stadium in Beijing, China, it was announced on Monday.

The June 24 card is the first in a series of four events slated to take place in 2016 as part of a promotional agreement between Min Du Modoson and Liu Gang of Max Power Promotions and Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing. Fortuna-Sosa will headline a card that will be seen locally in China on the sports channel CCTV-5. No U.S. broadcaster has been announced.

The Dominican Republic’s Fortuna is the WBA’s so-called “Regular” champion after winning the professed title with a unanimous decision victory against Bryan Vasquez last May on the undercard of Amir Khan-Chris Algieri in Brooklyn. The heavy-handed southpaw last fought in September, stopping Carlos Ivan Velasquez in the tenth round to retain the secondary belt.

“He’s a strong fighter and he is always thinking in there,” Fortuna said of Sosa, according to a press release. “Nevertheless, I feel that I’m more talented and have more ability. I also have the stronger punching power. I have been waiting for this opportunity. I am looking forward to this fight for my team and my country. I’ve fought punchers before, and I box them until their power starts to dissipate and then I rumble with them.”

Sosa of Camden, New Jersey, last fought to a controversial majority draw with former featherweight titleholder Nicholas Walters in December in a fight many thought Walters easily won. HBO’s Harold Lederman scored the bout 99-91 for Walters on the undercard of Luis Ortiz-Bryant Jennings in Verona, New York.

“I’m not really doing anything different training for him,” Sosa said. “Everything I’m doing is working, so I don’t fix anything that’s not broken. I’m excited and nervous to fight in China. It’s my first time out of the country for me. I can’t wait to go there and I know it’ll be a beautiful experience.”
