A warrant has been issued for the arrest of boxer Adrien Broner on charges of felonious assault and aggravated robbery after he allegedly beat up a man over money he owed from a bowling match, a source in the Cincinnati Police Department told RingTV.com on Thursday. Broner is scheduled to defend his WBA junior welterweight title against Ashley Theophane on April 1 at the DC Armory in Washington, D.C., in the main event of a “PBC on Spike TV” card. But that fight now seems in question after these charges.

“I seriously doubt (he will be able to fight) unless he turns himself in and makes some kind of arrangement with the court,” the police source said. “They would have to decide that. His lawyer will be able to make a request and it will be up to the judge.”

Broner is wanted for allegedly assaulting a man outside of the Cincinnati bowling alley “Madison Bowl” after the man won money off him, a second police source said. The charges were filed earlier this week, the source said. An employee of the bowling alley who was there the night of the alleged incident told RingTV.com in a phone interview that he can recall Broner gambling with cash with another man on Jan. 21, before the assault and robbery allegedly took place.

“He does come in here and bowl sometimes,” the man said. “He’s got a little entourage that comes in with him and they bowl for a little while. I haven’t seen him since evidently that night when this apparently happened. I know they bowl for money.”

According to TMZ.com, which first reported the charges, the incident took place at 3:30 a.m. that night “after Broner and another man had been making high stakes bets with each other at the lanes.”

The man, identified as Christopher Carson, filed a lawsuit against Broner on Feb. 5, alleging that he won $14,000 off Broner in bowling side-bets, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer, which obtained a copy of the lawsuit. When Broner asked if he could wager another $6,000 on a final game, Carson refused, angering Broner, the lawsuit said.

Broner and a set of eight men later met Carson around 3 a.m. outside the bowling alley, the lawsuit says. Broner, who was armed, split his chin with a punch and knocked him unconscious, the lawsuit alleges. Carson later woke up with his chin bleeding and his winnings gone, the lawsuit says, according to the Enquirer.

A Cincinnati police source told RingTV.com that police in Washington, D.C., where Broner is training, are aware of the warrant for his arrest. A spokesperson for the DC Armory, where the fight is taking place, had no comment on the situation. PBC spokesman Tim Smith released a statement, saying: “It’s a legal matter that Broner will have to handle with his attorney.”
