The televised undercard for Saul Alvarez’s RING and WBC middleweight championship on May 7 on HBO PPV against Amir Khan was formally announced on Monday and the reaction should be a lot different than the initial assessment of the main event.

While reviews for Canelo-Khan were all over the map, the undercard should get a quieter, though mostly positive response: David Lemieux will face Glen Tapia in the co-main event; Mauricio Herrera takes on Frankie Gomez; And Patrick Teixeira squares off against Curtis Stevens to open the PPV telecast (9 p.m. ET) at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

“We want to give back to the fans with this undercard and provide thrilling, action-packed bouts leading up to the main event with Canelo Alvarez vs. Amir Khan on May 7,” Golden Boy CEO Oscar De La Hoya said in a press release. “We appreciate the fans support and wanted to give them the best bang for their buck with these televised undercard fights.”

Lemieux-Tapia is an intriguing co-feature for the redemptive themes involved. Lemieux (34-3, 31 knockouts) failed to make weight in a middleweight bout earlier this month against James De La Rosa. Now, he gets the chance to revive his career after he was dominated by Gennady Golovkin last October in a middleweight unification match.

“I am back,” Lemieux said in the release of the middleweight bout. “I am coming back strong and ready to be on top of the middleweight division where I belong.”

Similarly, after struggling at junior middleweight, Tapia (23-2, 15 KOs) gets to show that making 154 pounds was a possible reason for his lack of durability and that he’s a true middleweight after getting knocked out by Michel Soro in his last fight and James Kirkland in 2013.

“This is a make or break moment,” Tapia said. “I can’t wait to show everyone what I am made of. People will see a new and improved Glen Tapia and this is the best place to show it- as part of a stellar undercard. I know David will be a tough opponent, but I am ready for this challenge to take on the best in the division and show the world a fully realized Glen Tapia.”

Herrera (22-5, 7 KOs) was in talks to face Lucas Matthysse on the card but with Matthysse still not fully healed from an eye injury, Herrera teamed up with Gomez (20-0, 13 KOs) in another intriguing welterweight match-up that will answer questions about Gomez’s status as a player in the division. Herrera, who has faced Ruslan Provodnikov, Hank Lundy and Danny Garcia in his career, seems to like his chances.

“May 7 is the day I have to slaughter another young lion to prove myself again,” Herrera said. “Frankie Gomez is a strong fighter that will bring the absolute best out of me. I will be in tip top shape for the mega-event.”

The 24-year-old Gomez is eager to test his skills against the 35-year-old veteran Herrera.

“This is the kind of fight I have been training for my entire career,” Gomez said. “Herrera is a recognized and ranked fighter, he has a lot of experience and it’s my chance to prove myself and show everyone who has doubted me, what I can do in the ring. I feel very excited to be part of a great undercard, fans can expect an exciting night, don’t miss it.”

The undefeated Teixeira (26-0, 22 KOs) will step up in class to face former title challenger Stevens, who hasn’t fought since Oct. of 2014 when he lost a lackluster decision to Hassan N’Dam in an IBF middleweight eliminator.

“I am excited to be part of one of the biggest boxing events of the year,” Teixeira said. “I promise to go out to the ring fully prepared for the best Curtis Stevens and show that I am a fighter to be feared in the middleweight division.”

The big-punching Stevens (27-5, 20 KOs) is ready to get back into the middleweight title picture, he said. Golden Boy worked out a deal with Stevens’ promoter Main Events to get him on the card.

“This guy is a zero and has got to go,” Stevens remarked. “I’m ready to start climbing up in the rankings again and am happy to be on this great HBO card with my man Canelo Alvarez.”
