Levan Ghvamichava: Of wolf and man

The Premier Boxing Champions events running on FS1 have done a decent job placing some under-the-radar types onto our watch lists.
Two of those types are seeking to pass their audition on Tuesday as Levan Ghvamichava takes on Sergey Lipinets.
These two junior welterweights will clash at the Robinson Rancheria and Resort in Nice, California.
It feels like a coin-flip fight.
But of course, manager Gary Hyde doesn’t think so. His kid, Ghamichava, age 30, boasts a 16-1-1 mark (12 knockouts). The 5-foot-8 Georgian is a fan fave among those who admire the hirsute. His nickname is “The Wolf.”
Lipinets is a 26-year-old Kazakh with an 8-0 (6 KOs) record. He loves to wing his power right early and often and Ghamichava’s trainer Virgil Hunter will have the Georgian be respectful and wary of its velocity.
So, Mr. Hyde, tell us more about your beast…er, boxer.
“He won seven senior titles in Georgia before I signed him in 2010,” said the Irishman, a keen talent scout who is building a top-tier cabal of contenders. “He gathered great momentum, winning his first 10 fights, eight by KO, before he met the rugged Alberto Herrera (in 2013), who got the decision on a split.”
Lipinets must be cognizant that Levan has a left hook which can scramble his senses if he takes his eye off of it.
Hyde relocated Ghamichava to Hayward, California, under the guidance of Hunter and Hyde declares the pairing has paid obvious dividends. The hook is there, as is more defensive responsibility. “He has been working really hard for his upcoming bout against Lipinets, sparring very competitive rounds with Amir Khan and Andre Berto,” Hyde said. “Levan is really focused on the job at hand and he will expose Lipinets by out-boxing him, outsmarting him and he will wear him down round by round before knocking him out.”
Not for nothing but Michael Woods has done a decent job placing some under-the-radar types onto our watch lists too. It helps us editors get used to spelling some seriously difficult surnames.
