Unbeaten Cuban heavyweight Luis Ortiz earned top-10 contender status with a seventh-round stoppage of former title challenger Bryant Jennings on Saturday in Verona, New York.

Ortiz (24-0, 21 knockouts), who had rocked Jennings with flush power shots in Rounds 1 and 3, was being outworked by the gritty Philadelphia native (especially on the inside) but the 240-pound southpaw landed a massive left uppercut two minutes into Round 7. The punch dropped Jennings (19-2, 10 KOs) for the first time in the American’s career. Jennings got up on wobbly legs and was nailed with some follow up punches that knocked him off balance and promoted referee Dick Pakozdi to wave the bout off at 2:41 of Round 7.

Jennings is THE RING’s No. 5-rated heavyweight. Ortiz is not currently ranked by the magazine but that will definitely change soon.

A complete ringside report from Joe Santoliquito will be posted shortly.
