Former RING junior flyweight champion Giovani Segura hopes to secure another world title belt soon. In the meantime, he will headline a fight card on Saturday.
Segura will fight Juan Palacios in a 10-round junior bantamweight bout at the We Ka Po Casino near Scottsdale, Ariz, just outside of Phoenix. The bout will be part of a co-promotion between Roy Jones Jr. and Iron Boy Promotions.
Segura (32-4-1, 28 knockouts) has not fought since Sept. 6, when he was stopped in the 11th round by Juan Francisco Estrada in Mexico City. The loss snapped a three-bout winning streak.
Segura, who resides in the Los Angeles suburb of Bell, was briefly mentioned as a possible opponent for RING flyweight champion Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez before Brian Viloria was finalized as Gonzalez’s opponent for their 12-round clash on Oct. 17.
The 33-year-old Segura is ranked No. 8 as a flyweight by THE RING magazine, as well the WBA and WBC.
Palacios (29-5-2, 22 KOs) is winless in his last four bouts, a stretch of over three years. In his last bout on July 17, Palacios lost a close, eight-round unanimous decision to unheralded Alexander Taylor. Palacios is a two-time world title challenger in the strawweight division.
In an eight-round junior middleweight bout, Louis Rose will fight Andrew Hernandez and unbeaten junior featherweights Carlos Castro and Juan Carlos Guillen square off in a six-round bout.
