Ankle injury forces Randy Caballero out of Feb. 27 title defense

Bantamweight beltholder Randy Caballero suffered an ankle injury during training camp and has withdrawn from the first defense of his IBF title that was scheduled for Feb. 27 in his hometown of Indio, California, Golden Boy Promotions announced on Tuesday.

Caballero (22-0, 13 knockouts), who won the vacant belt with a spirited unanimous decision over former titleholder Stuart Hall last October in Monte Carlo, was scheduled to defend his it against former two-time title challenger Alberto Guevara, of Mazatlan, Mexico.

The rest of the Fox Sports 1-televised card, which takes place at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, will proceed with a new main event to be announced shortly. The undercard of the event – which includes the co-feature between undefeated junior featherweight prospect Diego De La Hoya (8-0, 6 KOs) and Manuel Roman (17-3-3, 6 KOs), as well as near-7-foot Chinese heavyweight project Taishan (2-0, 2 KOs) and the pro debut of Brazilian amateur star Everton Lopes – remains intact.

Caballero, as can be expected, is very disappointed that his homecoming will have to be rescheduled.



“I was very excited to bring my first title defense to my hometown for all my fans, friends and family who have been on this journey with me from the beginning,” the 24-year-old boxer-puncher said in a press release. “I am devastated that this injury is stopping me from continuing this journey; however I expect to make a full recovery from surgery and will be ready to face any opponent that wants to stand in my way. I promise my fans that I will back and better than ever!”

Due to the nature of the cancelled main event being a world title fight, Fantasy Springs Resort Casino has reduced ticket prices to $25, $35 and $45 and is accepting ticket exchanges at a the new revised and reduced price in person at the Fantasy Springs Box Office or via telephone (800) 827-2946.

Tickets previously purchased will no longer be valid and a ticket exchange is necessary. It is highly recommended to replace tickets at your earliest convenience as new tickets purchased for the February 27, 2015 fight will be based on seating availability.
