Junior welterweight contender Viktor Postol could fight on the undercard of the April 11 143-pound catchweight bout between RING champion Danny Garcia and IBF titleholder Lamont Peterson, according to the unbeaten Ukrainian’s manager Vadim Kornilov.
THE RING’s No. 7-rated junior welterweight, Postol (26-0, 11 knockouts) is the WBC’s mandatory challenger for Garcia (29-0, 17 KOs), who currently holds the WBC and WBA belts. Postol accepted a step-aside deal in October, allowing each of the boxers to take one fight within the ensuing four months. Part of that deal, reportedly, was that Postol would fight on Garcia’s next undercard.
However, Kornilov told RingTV.com that the deal still has to be finalized for Postol’s berth on the Garcia-Peterson card.
Garcia-Peterson was announced during a Jan 14 press conference in New York. The fight is part of NBC’s new boxing series titled “Premier Boxing Champions” (“PBC on NBC”) that was adviser Al Haymon.

“It was confirmed with Al. Postol is planning to fight on April 11 on the undercard of Garcia-Peterson in preparation for a big match-up for the title, hopefully for the WBC title after that,” Kornilov told RingTV.com. [who has been co-promoted by Elite Boxing out of Ukraine and Haymon’s traditional rival, Bob Arum, CEO of Top Rank Promotions.

“We’re all working very well together. I am not a promoter; I’m a manager, so I’m always looking to make sure that the fighter is well off and so that the feuds and conflicts don’t prevent the fighter from going where he has to go. We’re all working together on behalf of Postol to make sure that everything is done.”

Postol is coming off an 11th-round knockout of Selcuk Aydin last May. The HBO-televised bout was a WBC title eliminator bout for the right to face Garcia. Top Rank has options on Postol from the fight with Aydin.

“During the first or second week of February, Postol will be flying into Los Angeles for camp,” said Kornilov of Postol, who is trained by Freddie Roach and assistant Marvin Somodio. “He was trained by Freddie and Marvin for his last fight with Aydin and the same plan will be followed for this fight.”

Kornilov said Postol is prepared to face the WBC’s next available contender for the vacant belt should Garcia decide to campaign as a welterweight following the Peterson bout.

“This will be the second time in a row that Garcia has not defended the title, so that only gives us more of an opportunity to fight for the title,” said Kornilov of Garcia, whose last title defense was a disputed majority decision over Mauricio Herrera in March 2014.

“I’m sure that the WBC will have no other option than to give Postol the chance to fight for the title. [Garcia]’s not defended the title for a while, so it might be vacant by then. So I think that Postol will be fighting for the title no matter what, whether it’s vacant or whether Garcia still has it.”
