James De La Rosa turned in a breakthrough performance by defeating Alfredo Angulo by a unanimous decision in a 10-round middleweight fight on the Floyd Maywewather Jr.-Marcos Maidana card Saturday in Las Vegas.

De La Rosa (23-2, 13 knockouts) pounded the former junior middleweight contender from beginning to end with a wide array of punches, putting the Mexican down in the second round and later cutting him above the right eye. Angulo (22-5, 18 KOs) was typically aggressive and had his moments. That includes the ninth and 10th rounds, in which he hurt De La Rosa. However, he was clearly outworked over the course of the fight.

The scores were 98-90, 96-92 and 99-89 in De La Rosa’s favor. Angulo lost a point for a low blow in the seventh round.

De La Rosa, a Mexican-born Texan, was relatively unknown going into the fight, having never faced a high-profile opponent, and was 2-2 in his previous four fights.

Angulo’s career might be jeopardy. He has now lost three consecutive fights, the other two being 10th-round stoppages against Erislandy Lara and Canelo Alvarez.
