Veteran referee Kenny Bayless was selected by the Nevada State Athletic Commission to officiate the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Marcos Maidana rematch on Thursday.

The judges for the RING/WBC welterweight title bout, which takes place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, will be Dave Moretti of Las Vegas, Guido Cavalleri of Italy and John McKaie of New York. The selections were made during the NSAC’s monthly agenda hearing.

Bayless has refereed Mayweather’s victories over Oscar De La Hoya in May 2007, Shane Mosley in May 2010 and Canelo Alvarez in May 2013.

Other big fights Bayless has worked include Danny Garcia’s fourth-round TKO of Amir Khan in July 2012, Juan Manuel Marquez sixth-round KO of Manny Pacquiao in December 2012 and Pacquiao’s unanimous decision over Tim Bradley in April.

In September 2012, Bayless worked Maidana’s eighth-round TKO of Jesus Soto Karass.

GLEN TAPIA RETURNS TO ON OCT. 4 IN ATLANTIC CITY

Popular junior middleweight Glen Tapia Tapia (21-1, 13 knockouts), of Passaic, N.J., will return to action on Oct. 4 at Bally’s in Atlantic City against Donatis Bondorovas (18-5, 6 KOs), of Chicago, his manager, Pat Lynch, informed RingTV.com on Thursday.

“Glen’s going to be in against a very good, strong, durable guy. Glen’s going to have to be in great shape, like he always is, for a 10-rounder at Bally’s,” said Lynch. “Glen will be leaving for training camp to be with Freddie Roach on Sunday.”

Tapia returns to the site of his last fight in June, where he scored an 82-second knockout over Keenan Collins. Prior to Collins, Tapia lost in December by sixth-round stoppage to James Kirkland.

Due to irregularities in the results of his blood test, Tapia was pulled from last month’s card at New York’s Madison Square Garden that was headline by a knockout by WBA middleweight titleholder Gennady Golovkin over Daniel Geale.

Tapia had been scheduled to face Salim Larbi in an eight-rounder but was informed by the New York State Athletic Commission that he would not be able to participate on the card before the weigh-in for the fight.

Lynch said that junior welterweights Julian Rodriguez and Dustin Fleischer, the latter in his professional debut, will compete in separate bouts.

THOMPSON-SOLIS REMATCH SLATED FOR OCTOBER

Heavyweight Tony Thompson (39-5, 26 KOs) has confirmed that he will face Odlanier Solis (20-1, 13 KOs) in an October rematch of Thompson’s split-decision victory over the 2004 Cuban Olympic gold medalist in March.

The 6-foot-5 Thompson, who turns 43 in Oct. 18, is attempting to rebound from a unanimous decision loss to Carlos Takam in June.

“They’ve given us two dates in October, and they’re to sort it out now, but this time, I’m going to knock him the f–k out,” said Thompson.

“They gave me the split-decision the last time, when I clearly destroyed him, so this time, I’m going to make sure that I don’t let it go to the scorecards. I’m going to knock his ass out.”

Solis represented his fifth straight time fighting on foreign soil for Thompson, who had been outhustled during a unanimous decision loss in August 2013 to Bulgaria’s unbeaten Kubrat Pulev in his last fight in Germany.

The loss to Pulev ended Thompson’s two-bout winning streak, comprised of stoppages of England’s previously undefeated David Price in the second and fifth rounds in February and July 2013. Thompson rose from a second-round knockdown to win the latter.

Pulev-Thompson’s was an IBF eliminator for the right to face RING champion Wladimir Klitschko, against whom Thompson has been stopped in 11th and sixth rounds in Germany and Switzerland, respectively, during failed title challenges in July 2008 and July 2012.
