Deontay Wilder may face Jason Gavern on Aug. 16
Undefeated heavyweight contender Deontay Wilder could face Jason Gavern on the undercard of the Shawn Porter-Kell Brook headlined Showtime tripleheader at StubHub Center on Aug. 16 in Carson, Calif.
The Wilder-Gavern consideration was confirmed by Eric Gomez, vice president and matchmaker at Golden Boy.
A 2008 Olympic bronze medalist, Wilder Wilder (31-0, 31 knockouts) is coming off a 96-second knockout of Malik Scott in a WBC title eliminator bout in March. The win made Wilder the mandatory challenger to face WBC beltholder Bermane Stiverne (24-1-1, 21 KOs) in a bout that is being targeted for November.
In his last fight in November, Gavern (25-16-4, 11 KOs) won a majority decision over faded former multi-division titleholder James Toney in a three-round bout that was part of the British “Prizefighter Tournament” series. Gavern, a 37-year-old journeyman, won two out of three Prizefighter bouts on the same night, helping him rebound from a stretch of seven consecutive losses from November 2011 to May 2013.
It should be noted that those losses were stoppages to undefeated prospects and 10-round decisions to former titleholders Steve Cunningham and Oleg Maskaev.
Gavern has also won a split-decision over fringe contender Manuel Quezada, and battled to draws with Johnathon Banks and journeyman Travis Walker.
Also on the Porter-Brook card is a rematch between WBC super middleweight titleholder Sakio Bika and Anthony Dirrell, who fought to a draw in December, as well as a defense by WBC lightweight beltholder Omar Figueroa Jr. against Daniel Estrada, and a likely 135-pound match between former titleholder Jorge Linares and Ira Terry.
