Abner Mares defeats Jonathan Oquendo by a unanimous decision
Abner Mares survived a cut over his left eye to outpoint Jonathan Oquendo in a 10-round featherweight fight on the Canelo Alvarez-Erislandy card Saturday in Las Vegas.
Mares (27-1-1, 14 knockouts) hadn’t fought since he was knocked out by Jhonny Gonzalez in August of last year, meaning he was out of the ring for more than 10 months. The former three-division titleholder was somewhat sluggish early in the fight, perhaps suffering from ring rust. He also suffered a cut over his left eye in the fourth round.
However, he seemed to find a groove as the fight progressed and did more than enough to earn a unanimous decision over Oquendo (24-4, 16 KOs). The scores were 96-94, 98-92 and 98-92.
Mares was supposed to have faced Gonzalez in a rematch a few months ago but had to pull out after injuring his ribs.
