Junior welterweight title challenger Mauricio Herrera and three-division titlewinner Abner Mares are being considered for the Showtime PPV undercard of the July 12 Canelo Alvarez-Erislandy Lara main event at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Golden Boy Vice President and matchmaker Eric Gomez informed RingTV.com on Friday.

Herrera (20-4, 7 knockouts) is coming off a disputed majority decision lost in March to RING/WBA/WBC 140-pound champ Danny Garcia (28-0, 16 KOs). The well-traveled Southern Californian has out-pointed WBO titleholder Ruslan Provodnikov and suffered narrow decision setbacks to Karim Mayfield and Mike Alvarado. Provodnikov won the WBO belt by stopping Alvarado in 10 rounds in March of last year.

Although Herrera lamented the loss to Garcia, negotiations are ongoing, according to Gomez, for a clash with Johan Perez (19-1-1, 13 KOs), a winner of four straight fights since falling by seventh-round technical decision loss to Pablo Cesar Cano in July 2012.

Herrera, would like a rematch with either Garcia or Provodnikov, if not a bout with hard-hitting Lucas Matthysse, whom Garcia out-pointed in his previous bout last September.

Mares (26-1-1, 14 KOs) was being considered for the June 21 Showtime card at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.

But Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer said Mares, 28, indicated that he needed more time to adjust to trainer Virgil Hunter, who replaced his long time cornerman Clemente Medina, in the wake of Mares losing his WBC featherweight title after suffering a shocking first-round knockout loss to Jhonny Gonzalez in his last fight last August.
