LAS VEGAS — Floyd Mayweather Jr. said he elected to forgo the advice of trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. in order to engage more with Marcos Maidana en route to his majority decision victory on Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Known for his elusiveness in the ring, the 37-year-old Mayweather (46-0, 26 knockouts) said he took more risks against Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs), whose WBA welterweight title he added to the RING and WBC championships he already owned.

"My dad was giving me the best instructions in the world but I was doing what I wanted to do," said Mayweather, during the post-fight press conference. "The instructions he was giving me were totally correct."

Mayweather alternately complimented Maidana for landing 221 punches against him — more than any other fighter in his past bouts, according to Compubox Stats — although he also derided the Argentine slugger for being too rough.

Had he listened to his father, however, Mayweather said, "It would have made it more of a one-sided fight."

"It wouldn't have made it a boring fight but it would have made it more of a one-sided fight…Sometimes, you gotta say, 'You know what? I gotta get some bumps and bruises today and give the fans what they want to see," said Mayweather.

"I'm pretty sure after my numbers come in, with that, it was worth it. It was worth it. For the next fight down the road, they'll say, 'Floyd gave us what we wanted, so we coming back.' And that's what it's about. The fans are very, very important. I love the fans."
