Jermall Charlo stops Hector Munoz in fifth round

Junior middleweight Jermall Charlo scored his 12th straight stoppage by fifth-round technical knockout over Hector Munoz as the main event on Saturday night's Showtime Extreme card at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.

The 23-year-old twin brother of Jermell Charlo, Charlo (18-0, 14 KOs) continued to surge against Munoz (22-13-1, 14 KOs). Charlo had last been in the ring for a fifth-round stoppage of Joseph De los Santos in December while Munoz, 35, was knocked out in the third round by Ronald Cruz in November and has lost four of his past five fights.

Charlo was slated to face IBF titleholder Carlos Molina last month until Molina was arrested five days prior to the fight, which was canceled.

In the co-feature, junior middleweight 2012 Olympian Terrell Gausha (9-0, 5 KOs) scored a sixth-round knockdown during his unanimous decision over Charles Whittaker (40-16-2, 24 KOs), and welterweight Frankie Gomez (17-0, 13 KOs) dropped his man in the first round of a second-round technical knockout over Orlando Vasquez (12-4-1, 6 KOs).



The 26-year-old Gausha had last been in the ring for unanimous decision over George Sosa in February, and Whittaker, who turned 40 in January, was coming off a fourth-round knockout of Juan Manuel Matias in October.

The 22-year-old Gomez scored his second straight knockout, having come off a first-round knockout of Prince Doku Jr in December.

Also, junior featherweight and 2012 U.S. Olympian Joseph "JoJo" Diaz (10-0, 7 KOs) unanimously decisioned Luis Maldonado (38-12-1, 29 KOs) the 21-year-old Diaz Jr. had scored seventh straight knockouts entering the fight with the 36-year-old Maldonado, who has lost his last six straight and the previous two by stoppage.

Diaz was coming off last month's fifth-round technical knockout of Jiovany Fuentes and Maldonado's latest was a third-round knockout loss to unbeaten Jessie Magdaleno in August.

In another fight, lightweight Sharif Bogere (24-1, 16 KOs), who had last be in the ring for a unanimous decision loss to WBA titleholder Richar Abril in March 2013, scored a 50-second knockout over Arturo Urena (20-17-1, 16 KOs).

The bouts were part of an undercard that precedes the Showtime tripleheader headlined by welterweight Keith Thurman against Julio Diaz and supported by RING number one-rated junior welterweight Lucas Matthysse versus John Molina and WBC lightweight titleholder Omar Figueroa Jr. opposite Jerry Belmontes.
