WASHINGTON — Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer said "the sky is the limit" for IBF welterweight titleholder Shawn Porter in the wake of Saturday's fourth-round technical knockout of Paulie Malignaggi, adding that he "would love to see" Porter face RING number one-rated pound-for-pound fighter Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the future.

Prior to Malignaggi, whom he cut beneath the left eye with and jab and floored twice in the final round at the D.C. Armory on Showtime, Porter (24-0-1, 15 knockouts) was coming off a unanimous decision win in December that dethroned southpaw Devon Alexander, during which he dictated a physical fight that left both fighters bleeding from cuts around their eyes.

Mayweather (45-0, 26 KOs) will defend his RING and WBC 147-pound championships against WBA counterpart Marcos Maidana (35-3, 31 KOs) on May 3 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Showtime Pay-Per-View.

Both Mayweather and Porter are advised by the powerful Al Haymon.

"We'll discuss it with Al and with Team Porter but I mean, why not? For me, as a fan, after what we've seen that he has done with Devon, who is an outanding boxer, and what he's done with Paulie, who is an outstanding boxer, I would love to see it," said Schaefer, sitting next to Porter and his father and trainer, Kenny, in press row after the fight on Saturday night.

"Floyd is the best the best boxer from a boxing point of view, so I would love to see the match-up. With somebody who is as young and aggressive and relentless as Shawn? Relentless is the word. He goes for it when he sees that he has somebody in trouble. I, as a fan, would love to see that fight."

On Monday, however, Porter learned that he and Golden Boy have until July to make his second defense against England's Kell Brook (32-0, 22 KOs), IBF President Daryl Peoples informed RingTV.com. Golden Boy and Matchroom Sport, which handles Brook, have until May 21 to reach a deal. If not, a purse bid will be ordered, said Peoples. Peoples said Porter and Golden Boy were granted an exception to make the match with Malignaggi.

The 27-year-old Brook has won four straight by knockout and was last in the ring for last month's eighth-round stoppage of Alvaro Robles. The win followed a fourth round stoppage in October over ex-beltholder Vyacheslav Senchenko, whom Brook floored twice.

Porter's victory ended Alexander’s winning streak at four consecutive bouts since falling to Tim Bradley, who was dethroned as WBO 147-pound beltholder on April 12 by Manny Pacquiao after having won the belt from Pacquiao by split decision in June 2012.

A former Manny Pacquiao sparring partner, Porter began his career at 165 and has fought as a junior middleweight a few times.

Porter’s victory over Alexander was preceded by last September’s unanimous decision over ex-beltholder Diaz with whom Porter had battled to a draw in December 2012.

Kenny Porter said he would like to land on the undercard of a planned fight between junior middleweights Saul Alvarez and Erislandy Lara, slated for Showtime Pay-Per-View on July 12 at the MGM Grand.

"The sky is the limit. I think that there will be big fights for Shawn Porter. He is clearly one of the best welterweights now," said Schaefer. "I think he is a threat to everyone after we've seen what he's done with Devon Alexander, who is another great fighter, and now, following that up with Paulie Malignaggi. I see a lot of great opportunities. This is the hottest weight class and to be such a threat in the hottest weight class, as I said, the sky is the limit."

FROCH-GROVES, DEGALE-GONZALES, MCDONELL-ROCHAWAT TRIPLEHEADER

RING No. 7-rated bantamweight Jamie McDonnell  (23-2-1, 10 KOs) will face Tabtimdaeng Na Rachawat (52-2, 34 KOs) on the May 31 undercard of a rematch between IBF super middleweight titleholder Carl Froch (32-2, 23 KOs) and George Groves (19-1, 15 KOs) at Wembley Stadium in London, Matchroom Sport has announced.

Also on the card is a bout between super middleweights James DeGale (18-1, 12 KOs) and Brandon Gonzalez (18-0-1, 10 KOs) in an IBF eliminator for the right to face the Froch-Groves winner.
