Shawn Porter handed veteran Paulie Malignaggi the most devastating loss of his career, overpowering and overwhelming the two-division beltholder to a fourth-round stoppage in the co-featured bout of the Bernard Hopkins-Beibut Shumenov light heavyweight unification bout on Saturday in Washington, D.C.

Porter (24-0-1, 15 knockouts), who defended the IBF welterweight title he won from Devon Alexander last year for the first time, did not allow Malignaggi to get into the fight. Starting the Showtime-televised bout aggressively but also making Malignaggi miss his vaunted jab with head movement as he quickly closed the distance.

Porter, a 26-year-old native of Akron, Ohio, rocked Malignaggi (33-6, 7 KOs) with hooks and crosses that were set up with quick jabs in Round 2 and continued to rough the 33-year-old Brooklynite in Round 3. Porter backed Malignaggi near the ropes with a series of jabs before decking seasoned boxer with a right to the ear in the opening seconds of Round 4.

Porter did not hesitate to close the show once it was clear that Malignaggi was hurt. The naturally bigger man jumped on his wounded prey, battering Malignaggi against the ropes before two lead left hooks followed by a right cross and two-fisted attack forced the part-time commentator through the ropes and onto the ring apron where referee Sam Williams halted the fight 1:14 of the round.
