San Diego-based lightweight Mercito Gesta ended a 16-month ring absence with Friday night's eighth-round knockout of Mexico's Edgar "Basuras" Riovalle at The Del Mar Fairgrounds, in Del Mar, Calif.

A 26-year-old born in the Philippines, Gesta (27-1-1, 15 KOs) finished off was the 27-year-old Riovalle (37-18-2, 26 KOs) at 0:47 of the round. It was Riovalle's fourth loss in his past five fights.

"I'm happy with my performance. I wanted to get the victory by any means and I took him out of there. I was a little rusty, but I shook that rust off last night," said Gesta, in a release. "I know if I continue to work hard I'll get back on top. My goal is to work my way back into another world title shot. I want to thank all my fans who came out to support me."

Gesta had last been in the ring for a unanimous-decision loss to IBF beltholder Miguel Vazquez in December 2012. Gesta was scheduled to face Nigerian Ajose Olusegun last July but the fight was called off after Gesta injured a rib.

Entitled "Ringside at Del Mar," the event was the second edition of a boxing series being presented by Paco Presents in association with A&T GYM, Barron Entertainment, Golden Boy and Don Chargin, according to an earlier release.
