Canelo Alvarez stopped Alfredo Angulo 47 seconds into the 10th round Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 knockouts) seemed to have won every round in a dominating performance, which left Alfredo Angulo with a battered face and little hope, when referee Tony Weeks decided enough was enough.

Alvarez came out of his corner at the opening bell firing hard, accurate shots that kept the easy-to-hit Angulo (22-4, 18 KOs) on his heels much of the fight. Alvarez also showed off his defensive skills, which made him very difficult to hit cleanly.

The result was a fight that probably was disappointing for those hoping for an entertaining – and competitive – fight.

The ending was strange. Alvarez landed a single big uppercut, which prompted Weeks to jump in and end matters. The stoppage might have been somewhat premature but it definitely saved a battered fighter from taking more punishment.

A full report will follow shortly.
