Leo Santa Cruz defeated Cristian Mijares by a unanimous decision to retain his WBC junior featherweight title on the Canelo Alvarez-Alfredo Angulo card Saturday in Las Vegas.

Santa Cruz (27-0-1, 15 knockouts) was typically aggressive, applying heavy pressure from the opening bell. Mijares, a former three-time junior bantamweight titleholder, never gave up but couldn’t punch at the same rate as Santa Cruz. The scores were 119-109, 120-108 and 120-108.

Neither fighter went down or was seriously hurt, although Santa Cruz was cut above his right eye by an accidental head butt in the fourth round.
