Beibut Shumenov made a spectacular comeback from an 18-month hiatus from boxing, stopping then-unbeaten Tamas Kovacs 2 minutes, 55 seconds into Round 3 to retain his WBA light heavyweight title on the Adrien Broner-Marcos Maidana card Saturday at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

Shemenov (14-1, 9 knockouts) put Kovacs (23-1, 14 KOs) down in each round, the last time with a vicious right that prompted referee Rafael Ramos to stop the fight.

The Kazakhstani patiently broke down Kovacs, a Slovak who was fighting in the U.S. for the first time.

The first round was fairly even until Shumenov put Kovacs down with a wide, but powerful left hook with seconds to go in the first round. After that, Shumenov, apparently shedding rust, took charge of the fight.

Afterward, Shumenov said he would be willing to defend his belt against Bernard Hopkins.

A full report will follow shortly.
